Specifying with Intent: Designing Through the Details is a seven-part, in-person professional development series created specifically for the design community — built by Steelcase and Storr Office Environments for the specifiers who have to get the details right the first time. Each session takes a deep dive into one part of the specification process: furniture language, surface materials, ergonomics, electrical coordination, healthcare and education product requirements, and sustainable construction. You’ll walk away with practical knowledge, product expertise, and real-world insight you can apply to your very next proposal.
This is a working session, not a webinar. Every date is capped at 25 seats so you get real access to the educators leading it — some of Steelcase’s sharpest subject-matter experts, teaching alongside local specialists who work in these details every day.

September 23 — Ergonomics: Harder-Working Facts Educator: Kevin Butler, MS, CPE Be an asset to your client. This session breaks down the ergonomics facts that actually change a spec — what’s worth pushing for, what’s marketing, and how to advise your client with confidence.
October 27 — Furniture Language 101 Educator: Susan Lewis, IIDA It’s not your basic workstation anymore. A grounding session in how today’s furniture systems are described, specified, and configured — the vocabulary and logic behind a modern spec.
November 12 — Specialty Products: Education Educator: Jami Moyer The product details you need to know for education environments, and how Steelcase and Storr support the shifts happening in this vertical — from flexible classrooms to durability requirements.
January 13 — Specialty Products: Healthcare Educator: Ellen Andrews, BSN, RN Healthcare specs carry a different set of rules. Learn the product details that matter most in clinical and care environments, taught from the perspective of a working nurse.
February 10 — Electrical Details Educator: Joe Steinbauer, SWAT Team The facts you need to know about power and data at the furniture level — what’s required, what’s often missed, and how to coordinate the connection between building and furniture for a spec that actually works on installation day.
March 10 — Circular Interior Construction Educator: Elizabeth Young Prefab construction, designing for disassembly, and sustainability — how circular design principles are changing what a responsible spec looks like.
April 14 — Surface Materials Educator: Designtex COMs, testing, backers, construction, and content — a hands-on look at how surface material choices hold up in the real world, straight from the source.
